The problem is that if you order to charge they will use spears, I believe that the only way for them to use maces is if you send them on foot.

The point of Vlad Crossbowmen is you can field a whole lot of them and they are easily replaceable. Any crossbow will pack a punch anyway so their 130 crossbow skill won't be a detriment.
